Berzelius Symposium 48
Emerging and Resurgent Infections

November 11–12 1999

The increasing threats to health from infectious diseases have been widely recognised in recent years. This conference will address the clinical impact of emerging and resurgent infections and antimicrobial resistance. In view of the current public, political and professional concerns about antimicrobial susceptibility, including antiviral resistance, this topic has been selected as one of the key themes of the symposium. The implications for public health and clinical practice will be discussed.

The clinical and epidemiological features of several emerging diseases will be presented. Particular attention will be paid to the determinants including the political, sociological and behavioural components, within a European context.

The public health response will be considered including the establishment of several surveillance and response networks within the European Union. The role of microbiologists, epidemiologists and other public health practictioners and clinicians in these developments will be discussed.

The final part of the conference will focus on options for prevention and control, taking as a major theme aspects of immunisation in adults.

The symposium will be held in the centrally located beautiful 19th century building of the Swedish Society of Medicine, Stockholm. The symposium dinner will be held in the world famous Vasa museum on 11 November.
